Who has the right to make your health care decision?
You do, if you are able to make and communicate your health care decisions. your doctors should tell you about the treatment they recommend, other reasonable alternative, and important medical risks and benefits of that treatment. You decide what health care, if any, you will or will not accept. Advance Directives give each person the opportunity to put in writing the type of care preferred if you are NOT able to communicate because you are unconscious or unable to express it. It also allows you to name someone that you trust to make the decision for you in case you are not able to do so. |
What is a health care power of attorney and how do you make one?
It is a written statement in which you may name another person to make health care decisions for you. You should discuss your health care wishes with this person. The health care power of attorney must state that the person you name can only make health care decisions for you while you are unable to make these decisions, if this is what you want |
