Healthy La Paz
Community Garden

Healthy La Paz started the Parker Community Garden in 2016, to increase the community's access to fresh produce, encourage outdoor exercise, and promote social interaction. With the help of our community the community partners are able to educate La Paz County on the benefits of nutrition and physical activity thus helping to create a society that promotes health, well being, and strong social networks.

  • Having a garden plot requires some time for plot maintenance so it stays weed, and pest free.

Creating a safe space for community members to plant and harvest fresh produce in their neighborhood. The  Parker Community Garden has seven plots connected to an automated watering system making it easy for all members. In 2016, we started with wooden plots that were low to the ground. In 2018, cement bricks were donated and used to create higher plots to make it more accessible to all community members.

What does a garden do for the community?

Food Access
Limited access to healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, is a major barrier to healthy eating. Community garden helps promote healthy eating and access.

Education
Gardening is a learning experience its takes the right amount of sunlight, water, air, and nutrients at the right time. Parker community garden doesn't only provide a  space to garden. We also provide expertise and experience with the help of local Master Gardeners, The University of Arizona programs, and AZ Health Zone's Seed to Supper: A beginners guide to low cost vegetable gardening.

Physical Activity
Gardening is a recommended form of moderate physical activity. Community gardening can encourage more active lifestyles by providing children and adults the opportunity to exercise by stretching, bending, walking, digging and lifting tools and plants. It is also known to reduce stress.

Environmental Benefits
Plants take in C02 and release oxygen, improving air quality. They naturally help clean the air and the ground and they also help local habitats of insects like bees pollinating.

  • Bacillus Thuringiensis (B.T.): is a bacterium that is poisonous to some insects
  • Diatomaceous Earth
  • Iron phosphate granules
Other pest control options are available for more information contact your local master gardeners.
